David Immanuel's Background

David Immanuel, MD, PhD, is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and fellowship trained as a cornea specialist. His office is located on Hilton Avenue in Hempstead bordering Garden City (less than a mile south of the Garden City Hotel), where he has been in private practice for approximately 10 years. Dr. Immanuel is very excited about his recent decision to join North Shore Eye Care along with Dr. William Kasper of Garden City. North Shore Eye Care is an expanding group of multispecialty ophthalmologists with several offices in Suffolk County. As a partner, North Shore Eye Care will provide improved administrative support to Dr. Immanuel's practice, including staffing, billing, management and marketing.

Dr. Immanuel specializes in cataract and refractive surgery and performs as many as 400 cataract procedures per year. His goal with cataract surgery is not just to treat the cataract, but also to provide his patients with spectacle-free distance and near vision once the cataract has been removed. This is achieved by utilizing special intraocular lenses along with the precision of laser cataract surgery. Dr. Immanuel is very excited about offering this new technology to his patients because it makes cataract surgery both safer and more precise.

Dr. Immanuel has also trained and supervised cataract surgery for resident physicians at Nassau University Medical Center, where he served as an attending physician. He is currently on staff at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola and North Shore University Hospital in Syosset, and he performs surgery at Long Island Ambulatory Surgery Center in Brentwood and Island Eye Surgicenter in Carle Place.

Dr. Immanuel graduated as valedictorian from St. Paul's School in Garden City, N.Y., then graduated as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. He had extensive research experience and published numerous articles before embarking on a career in ophthalmology. Dr. Immanuel received his medical training at New York University School of Medicine and was in the Medical Scientist Training Program, where he received a combined MD and PhD degree while studying a gene involved in human sarcomas. He completed an internship in Medicine at York Hospital in York, Pa., and was elected chief resident at University of Maryland in Baltimore, where he completed his ophthalmology residency. He subsequently completed a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery with Dr. Theodore Perl at Corneal Associates of New Jersey.

The scope of Dr. Immanuel's surgical practice also includes: wavefront-guided bladeless LASIK, corneal transplant, DSAEK surgery and pterygium excisions. He also treats diseases of the cornea and ocular surface, including corneal dystrophies, keratoconus, corneal abrasions, recurrent corneal erosions, corneal infiltrates and ulcers, corneal edema and scarring, band keratopathy, contact related complications, Herpes Simplex and Herpes Zoster infections, dry eyes, meibomian gland disease and blepharitis.

In addition, Dr. Immanuel regularly sees patients with glaucoma (including providing SLT and iridotomy laser treatments), macular degeneration, diabetes and hypertensive retinopathy. The practice utilizes the latest technology, such as: Fourier domain OCT, specular microscopy, corneal topography, digital photography, tear film osmolarity, ultrasound biometry, high frequency pachymetry and Humphrey visual field. Dr. Immanuel strives to learn about new developments in ophthalmology and attends multiple conferences annually to keep up with the latest information and technology.

Dr. Immanuel is married to a genetics research scientist and teacher who works at Cornell Medical Center, and has a 10-year-old daughter, Leia, who loves to paint. When not working, Dr. Immanuel enjoys windsurfing, skiing and flying radio-controlled gliders.
